Introducing: Small School @ Home

You’ve asked and we’ve listened!  The next incarnation of the Small School is about to become a reality!  We’re moving indoors (sort of) for the time being until we get a lovely permanent woodland premises with our own lovely ‘classroom’.  For the near future, children will have free reign of our lovely countryside garden, play equipment and household facilities in Marshfield.

Starting in September, you’ll be able to sign your child up for one or two days of individualised learning with a focus on developing independent literacy and numeracy skills and developing independence in practical life skills.  The same Small School ethos of being child-led, process-based and open to change and development will still apply – only we are now going to focus on some of the more practical skills that children need as they’re growing older.

Jennifer Bailey is an experienced teacher, school administrator and Forest School leader who also has qualifications to teach children with SpLDs such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and other associated Speech and Language difficulties.  Jennifer worked for almost her entire teaching career with primary and secondary age children with Special Educational Needs and was responsible for creating personalised literacy intervention programmes, whole-school literacy projects and English classroom teaching.  Jennifer has also trained to assess, evaluate and develop specialised materials for literacy and numeracy difficulties not yet diagnosed.  Jennifer is also handy with a saw and makes a mean chocolate chip cookie.

Places will be extremely limited in order to allow individual attention in literacy and numeracy.  We will run three 12-week terms a year, roughly in-line with the Bristol City Council school term dates, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00-2:00.  Small School @ Home is for all primary aged children who have reached statutory school age, so 5-11/12.

A typical day:

10:00-11:00   Literacy Circuit (1-1 Literacy, Literacy Online, Literacy Games & Literacy Personal Work)

11:00-12:00    Science Experiment or Art Project

12:00-1:00     Lunch and Free Play (or cooking/woodworking projects)

1:00-2:00       Maths Circuit  (Small Group Tuition, Numeracy Online, Games and Individual Challenge Work)

£16 per day (sibling £12)

£28 for both days (sibling £24)

You can’t argue with that when you see how much a tutor charges for an hour!
